EUDDIC Cluster: Data-driven Distributed Industrial Response to Industry 4.0 Challenges (Recording available)

5G-Timber representative Marcello Urgo presenting at the EUDDIC Webinar

Marcello Urgo (POLIMI) presented 5G-TIMBER at EUDDIC Webinar

January 29, 2025 – The EUDDIC Online Webinar successfully showcased cutting-edge industrial responses to Industry 4.0 challenges, featuring three innovative project consortiums: Zero-SWARM, 5G-TIMBER, and RE4DY. Among the highlights was Marcello Urgo’s insightful presentation on the 5G-TIMBER pilot, demonstrating how Digital Twin (DT) technology is revolutionizing timber processing automation.

Representing 5G-TIMBER, Urgo, from POLIMI, detailed how timber processing companies can optimize operations, reduce downtime, and enhance machine efficiency through a data-driven approach. The project integrates IoT sensors, advanced Machine Learning (ML) models, and DT frameworks to streamline timber packing automation, traditionally reliant on manual adjustments and experience-based parameter tuning.

By adopting these innovative solutions, 5G-TIMBER is shaping a smarter, more efficient timber processing ecosystem, reducing the need for operator intervention and paving the way for predictive maintenance and process optimization. The project exemplifies how digital technologies can transform industrial processes, aligning with the broader goals of Industry 4.0.

The webinar also featured presentations on Zero-SWARM’s autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) for intra-logistics optimization and RE4DY’s collaborative machine tool performance self-optimization.

As the industry moves towards data-driven transformation, 5G-TIMBER’s pioneering work underscores the potential of Digital Twin and IoT integration in revolutionizing traditional manufacturing sectors. The event provided valuable insights for companies looking to leverage smart technologies for improved efficiency and sustainability.
